Classics Series: Tom Collins
Variations of a Tom Collins have existed for more than 200 years and it’s no surprise that this simple, but refreshing fizzy lemonade drink has remained popular until now. The Tom Collins is on my regular roster of summer drinks and is super quick to whip up a couple of servings. This recipe can easily be tailored to your taste by adjusting the amount of lemon juice, using fruit purees/syrups, or switching up the alcohol.
Classic Tom Collins Recipe (1 serving)
- 2 oz. gin
- 0.75 oz. of fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz. of 2:1 simple syrup
- 2 oz. sparkling water (unsweetened)
- Optional twists: Fruit simple syrups (strawberry, mango, pineapple), mint simple syrup
Equipment
- Cocktail shaker
- Jigger
- Citrus press
- Hawthorne strainer
- Fine mesh strainer
- Collins glass, stored in the freezer
Directions
- Cut the lemon in half and use the citrus press to squeeze 0.75 ounces of juice into the shaker
- Add the simple syrup and gin
- Add 3-4 handfuls of ice into the container and seal the shaker
- Shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds and the shaker is completely frosted
- Remove the top and add 2 ounces of sparkling water into the shaker
- Remove the Collins glass from the freezer and add ice
- Place a Hawthorne strainer on top of the shaker and double-strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer placed over the glass
- To garnish, cut a lemon wedge and place on the edge of the glass
Cheers!
