Classics Series: Daiquiri
To celebrate the first official week of summer, I’m kicking off Rum Week 2017 and will feature cocktails with rum as the alcohol base. Rum is a spirit made with sugar cane or its derivatives (sugar cane juice) and is produced all around the world. Since rum typically has a sweeter aroma and flavor, it’s mainly used in sweeter cocktails versus spirit-forward drinks.
One of the most popular rum cocktails is the Daiquiri, which likely originated in Cuba in late 1800’s. Similar to the Margarita, the Daiquiri only requires 3 ingredients and is a quick and delicious summer cocktail. Daiquiris can be served up, on the rocks, or blended depending on your preference.
Classic Daiquiri Recipe (1 serving)
- 2.5 oz. white/clear rum
- 0.75 oz. of fresh lime juice
- 0.25 oz. of 2:1 simple syrup
- Optional twists: Strawberry syrup, grapefruit juice, fruit purees
Equipment
Directions
- Cut the limes in half and use the citrus press to squeeze 0.75 ounces of juice directly into the stainless steel container
- Add the simple syrup and rum
- Add 3-4 handfuls of ice into the container and seal the shaker
- Shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds and the shaker is completely frosted
- Place a Hawthorne strainer on top of the shaker and double-strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer placed over the glass
