Experimental: Spooky Luna

In honor of the spookiest time of year and the spookiest cat in our house, I dedicate this drink to my black cat Luna! To make this drink a dark black color, I used activated charcoal, which is safe to ingest in small quantities and may have some detoxifying effects. The charcoal dyes the drink a cool black color, but has no impact on the flavor. Consider this for your next Halloween party!

Luna

Spooky Luna Ingredients: 1.5 oz. whiskey, 0.5 ounces yellow chartreuse, 0.25 ounces Benedictine, 0.75 ounces lemon zest, 0.25 ounces 2:1 simple syrup, 1/8 tsp. activated charcoal

Spooky Luna (1 serving)

  • 1.5 oz. whiskey
  • 0.5 oz. yellow chartreuse
  • 0.25 oz. Benedictine (the brand I use is technically a mix of Benedictine and Brandy, which still works)
  • 0.25 oz. 2:1 simple syrup
  • 0.75 oz. fresh lemon zest
  • 1/8 tsp. activated charcoal (Amazon link)
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters

Equipment

Directions

  1. Zest 0.75 ounces of lemon (around 1 medium sized lemon)
  2. Add the zest, whiskey, yellow chartreuse, Benedictine, syrup, charcoal, and bitters into the shaker
  3. Add 3-4 handfuls of ice into the container and seal the shaker
  4. Shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds and the shaker is completely frosted
  5. Place a Hawthorne strainer on top of the shaker and double-strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer placed over the glass
  6. No garnish needed

Enjoy!
