Modern Classics: Painkiller

After another intense Game of Thrones episode, I think a Painkiller is in order. This delicious tiki drink packs a sneaky punch with rum, coconut, orange, and pineapple. The key to the Painkiller is freshly grated nutmeg, which adds a nutty flavor that balances out the sweetness from the orange and pineapple juice. For an even stronger drink, you can use up to 4 ounces of rum with the recipe below.

Painkiller Ingredients: 3 ounces rum, 4 ounces pineapple juice, 1 ounce orange juice, 1 ounce cream of coconut, a dash of nutmeg

Painkiller Recipe (1 serving)

  • 3 oz. black or aged rum
  • 4 oz. fresh pineapple juice (click to see tips on pineapple juice)
  • 1 oz. fresh orange juice
  • 1 oz. cream of coconut (recommend Coco López brand)
  • Fresh nutmeg for garnish

Equipment

Directions

  1. Use the citrus press to squeeze 1 ounce of orange juice and add to the shaker
  2. Add the pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and rum to the shaker
  3. Add 3-4 handfuls of ice into the container and seal the shaker
  4. Shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds and the shaker is completely frosted
  5. Place a Hawthorne strainer on top of the shaker and double-strain the drink through a fine mesh strainer placed over the glass
  6. Add ice until the liquid reaches the top of the Collins glass
  7. To garnish, grate a thin layer of fresh nutmeg over the top of the drink and add an orange wedge to the edge

Cheers!
